I am 59 years old and have been married for 36 years. I have 2 Daughters aged 31 and 33 and a grandson 10 years old. I have been in the construction business doing plumbing, heating and kitchen and bath remodeling for the past 40 years. During that time I have also been buying and selling coins, jewelry and antiques as a combination hobby and 2 nd business. For the past 10 years I have gotten more serious about developing my skills in grading coins and assessing the value of new and vintage jewelry. I have decided that this is the time in my life to make a change in my occupation to something I enjoy more than the contracting business. I have been open at my Shelburne Road location for over a year and have purchased and sold many coins collections and quite a bit of estate jewelry as well as sterling silver tea sets and flatware sets.
I am glad to give free verbal appraisals on coins, silver, jewelry and A variety of small antiques. In this business, there is always something new coming into the shop and it's great to see interesting items whether I buy them or not. I don't deal in furniture because I don't have the room for large items. I am willing to set up appointments outside of my regular business hours to accommodate those with privacy or scheduling issues.
There are a few things to remember if you are thinking about selling coins or other antique items. The number one thing to remember is that your coins, jewelry or silver will generally be worth less if you clean or polish them. The surface of uncirculated coins is very fragile. Just a rub with a finger to get that little spot off can lower the value of a single coin by hundreds or even thousands of dollars. If a coin is dark, leave it alone. If an old piece of paper money is flat, don't bend it. Gold coins are especially sensitive to friction and will mark easily. Once the original surface of a coin is disturbed, the damage is irreversible.
Anyone wishing to sell single coins or a collection of hundreds of Coins may call for an appointment that fits into his or her schedule or can drop in during my regular hours. I generally pay with a check drawn on the Chittenden Bank or can, in some instances, pay in cash. I have a machine that will seperate coins as to denomination and count them quite quickly so there is no need to roll your coins.
Buying and selling jewelry is an area that causes a lot of confusion For the average consumer. Unfortunately there is a huge difference between the wholesale price and the retail price of jewelry. I can generally sell fine jewelry for one third of what the chain jewelry stores or the "quality" jewelry stores charge. Beware of inferior quality stones at the mall jewelry stores because they tend to use the stones that will provide the greatest percent of profit. Also, do not allow the salesperson to pressure you into making a decision on an expensive piece without thinking it through. That ring or bracelet will still be there tomorrow if you decide it is right for you at that price.
As I mention previously, my main business is coins and paper money, jewelry and sterling silver items. I also buy all scrap silver, gold and platinum. I buy better wristwatches and old pocket watches, art pottery and many other quality small antiques. It is a simple matter to make an appointment to come into the shop and see me or I can go to your house or bank to view your items that you might like to sell. I hear from many older people that the reason they are selling is because they are trying to scale down or to settle an estate. Having a garage sale or selling through an auction house can have an unsatisfactory result. I am always glad to advise a client on the best course of action to take to get the best possible prices for their items.
